Thursday Doors – Dover Castle

This is a reblog of a post entitled, “Thursday Doors – Dover Castle.” published by RobertaWrites. The Dover cliffs and the castle has been one of my favorite places to visit in the United Kingdom. As can seen be the photos, its a historical site that dates back to the Roman and Anglo-Saxon occupation. The medieval castle has great exhibitions.

Dover Castle is a medieval Castle in Dover, Kent, England. This is my favourite English castle to date and I have visited it three times during three separate visits to the UK. There is a lot to see at Dover Castle including the underground hospital that was established and used during WW2, the Roman lighthouse and a Saxon Church.

Shapeshifters are found in most mythologies and folk traditions around the world from ancient to modern times. In such traditions, humans change into vampires, werewolves, frogs, insects, and just any about any other creature imaginable and back again. Sometimes the transformation is controlled by the transformer who shifts shape at will.  Other times it is an unwelcome event such as a punishment and sometimes it is forced by a magical spell but there are many other reasons besides. Their roles in Celtic society were as broad as they were integral to daily life; story-teller, sage, teacher, priest, judge, sorcerer and keeper of the tribe’s traditions. Yet, very little is known for certain about them; they did not share their knowledge with the uninitiated and kept no records of their own but their influence lingered longest in the remotest realms of the Celts, such as in Brittany.

How to Write a Sidekick

The following is a reblog by Staci Troilo on how to use sidekicks in a story. I learned that a sidekick is an ally of the hero who has a beta role in the story. He can’t outshine the hero, though he might be smart or funny in his own right. Check out Staci’s helpful hints on how to use a sidekick in a story.

Ciao, SEers! Today I thought we’d talk about a character who isn’t used often enough and is discussed even less.

I’m referring to the sidekick.

Sure, we all write in friends and family. No one writes a single-character story. But I mean a true sidekick. Not a buddy, like in Lethal Weapon or Tango and Cash. Not a romantic partner like in When Harry Met Sally or The Proposal. I mean a sidekick. Like Watson to Holmes or Robin to Batman or Sam to Frodo.

Not sure of the difference? Let me explain.

First, let’s get a proper definition. A sidekick is an ally of the hero who has a beta role in the story.
