Thursday Doors – Dover Castle

This is a reblog of a post entitled, “Thursday Doors – Dover Castle.” published by RobertaWrites. The Dover cliffs and the castle has been one of my favorite places to visit in the United Kingdom. As can seen be the photos, its a historical site that dates back to the Roman and Anglo-Saxon occupation. The medieval castle has great exhibitions.

Welcome to Thursday Doors, a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. Feel free to join in on the fun by creating your own Thursday Doors post each week and then sharing your link in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time).

Dover Castle is a medieval Castle in Dover, Kent, England. This is my favourite English castle to date and I have visited it three times during three separate visits to the UK. There is a lot to see at Dover Castle including the underground hospital that was established and used during WW2, the Roman lighthouse and a Saxon Church.

Today, I am going to show you a few of my pictures of the castle and its doors.

Celtic Lore: Shapeshifters of Myth and Legend

The is a reblog of a MAY 27, 2021 Post entitled, Celtic Lore: Shapeshifters of Myth and Legend,” BY ZTEVETEVANS at the website UNDER THE INFLUENCE. It is a summary of some of my favorite Celtic myths which I think you will enjoy.

Under the influence!

This article was first published 11 March 2021 on #FolkloreThursday.com titled, Shapeshifters from the Celtic World by zteve t evans.

Shapeshifters

Shapeshifters are found in most mythologies and folk traditions around the world from ancient to modern times. In such traditions, humans change into vampires, werewolves, frogs, insects, and just any about any other creature imaginable and back again. Sometimes the transformation is controlled by the transformer who shifts shape at will.  Other times it is an unwelcome event such as a punishment and sometimes it is forced by a magical spell but there are many other reasons besides. Shapeshifters can be good or bad, often moving the story forward in a novel way or have some kind of symbolism that the teller wants to get across to their audience. There are many different kinds of shapeshifting and here…

The Druids of Brittany

The following is a reblog of an article entitled, “The Druids of Britanny,” posted on the website: Bonjour From Brittany. The druids of antiquity remain an enigma and a constant source of, sometimes, fanciful speculation. Their roles in Celtic society were as broad as they were integral to daily life; story-teller, sage, teacher, priest, judge, sorcerer and keeper of the tribe’s traditions. Yet, very little is known for certain about them; they did not share their knowledge with the uninitiated and kept no records of their own but their influence lingered longest in the remotest realms of the Celts, such as in Brittany.

Yet, very little is known for certain about them; they did not share their knowledge with the uninitiated and kept no records of their own but their influence lingered longest in the remotest realms of the Celts, such as in Brittany.

The little that we know about the mysterious druids comes from comments made about them in the writings of the Greek historians Strabo and Diodorus of Sicily who drew upon earlier works by Timagenes of Alexandria and Alexander of Miletus. Unfortunately, these earliest sources are now lost but the writings of their Roman contemporary, Julius Caesar, remain in print to this day. His account of the Gallic…

How to Write a Sidekick

The following is a reblog by Staci Troilo on how to use sidekicks in a story. I learned that a sidekick is an ally of the hero who has a beta role in the story. He can’t outshine the hero, though he might be smart or funny in his own right. Check out Staci’s helpful hints on how to use a sidekick in a story.

Story Empire

Ciao, SEers! Today I thought we’d talk about a character who isn’t used often enough and is discussed even less.

I’m referring to the sidekick.

Sure, we all write in friends and family. No one writes a single-character story. But I mean a true sidekick. Not a buddy, like in Lethal Weapon or Tango and Cash. Not a romantic partner like in When Harry Met Sally or The Proposal. I mean a sidekick. Like Watson to Holmes or Robin to Batman or Sam to Frodo.

Not sure of the difference? Let me explain.

First, let’s get a proper definition. A sidekick is an ally of the hero who has a beta role in the story.

That’s it. It’s that simple. He can’t outshine the hero, though he might be smart or funny in his own right. Look at Watson. He occasionally gets a brilliant observation…

THE AGE OF ARTHUR, PART NINETEEN: TRIUMPH AT BADON

The following is a reblog of THE AGE OF ARTHUR, PART NINETEEN: TRIUMPH AT BADON Posted on March 2, 2021 by barrycjacobsen at the website The Deadliest Blogger: Military History Page. This is a recount of THE BATTLE OF BADON HILL in which King Arthur had to race to the south to counter the Anglo-Saxons.

This is Part 19 of an ongoing series about 5th century Britain, unique among the territories of the Western Roman Empire that succeeded in holding back and even reversing the tide of Germanic conquest for nearly two centuries. This was an age of heroes… It was the Age of Arthur!
The series covers Britain in the 5th through the mid-6th Century A.D. It is a fascinating period, with the Classical civilization of Greece and Rome which gave way to the Germanic “Dark Ages”; the sunset of Celtic-Roman culture in Britain.

ARTHUR RETURNS SOUTH

Geoffrey of Monmouth states that Arthur was in the north, at Alclud, subduing the “Scots and Picts”. Alclud is obviously Alt Clut, the original name for Dumbarton Rock,  the chief stronghold of Strathclyde. This meshes well with the scenario described here previously, in which…
